Setting aside the fun activities of being at Telunas Beach and working through their week-long writer’s camp, the students of Singapore’s Swiss School took the time to perform a community development project. Their project was to help a local school on Pauh Island to build a canteen.

The Swiss School’s boys and girls were overwhelmed by the local students’ warm welcome. The boys and girls were given a chance to see the life of the people on the island as they were led to the school building, which was located on top of a hill. As they seated themselves in one of the classrooms, they were privileged to see a demonstration of the local cultural arts through music and dance. And then, it was time to work…

Working through the heat, equipped with the most important tool: water bottles, the students showed their enthusiastic spirits by carrying bricks to the construction site with smiles on their faces. The day continued as the Swiss School girls helped to teach English language through fun songs and body movements. Meanwhile, the boys did their part in a game of soccer with the local students. Soon after, it was the local students’ turn to teach a game of ‘Sepak Takraw’ to the Swiss School boys.

The children had enjoyed themselves so much that time passed by and it was time for lunch. The school staff had prepared traditional cuisine for the Swiss School boys and girls to enjoy. By that time, many local students were already anxious to continue having fun with the Swiss School students. However, it was time to go home and the kids would have to leave the island. The students and community will always remember the experience and good times that were shared.

Telunas Beach is proud and privileged to have hosted such a fun group of students and we would love to provide such experiences to your students. You can simply contact us to request further information to bring your school, church, or retreat groups to Telunas Beach.

A Telunas faithful, David Chin, turned me on to the Vibram Five Fingers® craze. My understanding is that the “shoes” were made popular through Christopher McDougall’s book Born to Run. What has followed is something on the verge of a barefoot/minimalist running revolution.

While running would be on my list of things I’d eventually like to try in these slipper-like shoes, my interests lie elsewhere. I just picked up a pair of the Classic model in the U.S. and I’m itching to try these out upon my return to Telunas. “What exactly will I use these for?” you may be asking yourself. I can’t wait to slip these on and enjoy the protection of Vibram rubber while feeling barefoot as I amble down the jetty. I’m thinking they’ll be great for paddling in the kayak and not having to worry about hopping in and out. I’m even more excited about leading a group on the jungle waterfall hike to the black pool while strolling “barefoot” but protected and then climbing up a rock ledge and leaping into the cool pool that awaits.

Stay tuned for updates and photos of my adventures in my Classics. Or, grab your own pair of FiveFingers®, Chacos, Keens, or your favorite outdoor shoe and give them a try at Telunas.
